The Benefits Of Massage
What exactly are the benefits of receiving massage or bodywork treatments? Useful for all of the conditions listed below and more, massage can:
Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion.
Assist with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers and shorten maternity hospital stays.
Ease medication dependence.
Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body’s natural defense system.
Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.
Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts.
Improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin.
Increase joint flexibility.
Lessen depression and anxiety.
Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.
Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation.
Reduce postsurgery adhesions and swelling.
Reduce spasms and cramping.
Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles.
Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller.
Relieve migraine pain.
A Powerful Ally
There’s no denying the power of bodywork. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it (pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic) or the reasons we seek it out (a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management), massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen.

Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be idealistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into:
Decreased anxiety.
Enhanced sleep quality.
Greater energy.
Improved concentration.
Increased circulation.
Reduced fatigue.
Furthermore, clients often report a sense of perspective and clarity after receiving a massage. The emotional balance bodywork provides can often be just as vital and valuable as the more tangible physical benefits.

Profound Effects
In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes cascade throughout the body, with profound effects. Research shows that with massage:
Arthritis sufferers note fewer aches and less stiffness and pain.
Asthmatic children show better pulmonary function and increased peak air flow.
Burn injury patients report reduced pain, itching, and anxiety.
High blood pressure patients demonstrate lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones.
Premenstrual syndrome sufferers have decreased water retention and cramping.
Preterm infants have improved weight gain.
Research continues to show the enormous benefits of touch—which range from treating chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and injuries, to alleviating the tensions of modern lifestyles. Consequently, the medical community is actively embracing bodywork, and massage is becoming an integral part of hospice care and neonatal intensive care units. Many hospitals are also incorporating on-site massage practitioners and even spas to treat postsurgery or pain patients as part of the recovery process.

Increase the Benefits with Frequent Visits
Getting a massage can do you a world of good. And getting massage frequently can do even more. This is the beauty of bodywork. Taking part in this form of regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you’ll be and how youthful you’ll remain with each passing year. Budgeting time and money for bodywork at consistent intervals is truly an investment in your health. And remember: just because massage feels like a pampering treat doesn’t mean it is any less therapeutic. Consider massage appointments a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan, and work with your practitioner to establish a treatment schedule that best meets your needs.

Energy Medicine

Energy medicine recognizes energy as a vital, living, and moving force that determines much about our health and happiness. The body's energies are key to health, vitality, and well-being. Energy medicine is the art and science of working with and teaching people to work with these energies to empower them to live happier, healthier lives. Long recognized by eastern cultures, subtle energy fields are only recently being studied and utilized by western medicine.

Energy Medicine is both a complimentary approach to traditional medical care, and a complete system for self-care and self-help. Healing takes place by activating the body's natural healing energies and by restoring energies that have become weak, disturbed or out of balance.

Energy medicine utilizes techniques from a variety of global healing traditions such as:

Acupuncture
Reiki
Pranic Healing
Yoga
Kinesiology
Qi Gong
Flow, balance, and harmony can be non-invasively restored and maintained within an energy system by focused use of the mind to move specific energies; and/or by surrounding an area with healing energies. By working with simple energy techniques to keep you energies balanced and humming, you can improve your health, sharpen your mind, and increase your joy and vitality.

Specifically, Lotus Heart specializes in the following energy traditions:

Reiki
Pranic Healing
Chakra Cleansing and Balancing

Infant Massage

Infant massage has been practiced by other cultures for centuries. Vimala Schneider McClure brought this ancient art to the United States in the 1970's, after she observed the positive effect it had on infants in India.

Research specific to the benefits of infant massage has been ongoing since the mid 1970's. This research has been conducted at various institutes and with infants who were premature, exposed to drugs in utero, and infants that had motor problems. All these categories of babies benefited from the nurturing touch of infant massage. These benefits included weight gain, neurological development, decreased hospitalization, and improved digestion.

Although it can seem like there is not much going on in a baby's world, it is a new and exciting time for them. It may seem like they do little but eat, sleep and demand attention, with a regular diaper change thrown in for good measure - but they are learning more now than they will ever learn again in such a short period of time. Little wonder that it can take time to adjust, from being thrust rudely from a state of tranquility, warmth and comfort into a world of changing faces, cold winds, warm baths and, well, everything else that we see every day and take for granted.

Numerous studies have found that massage plays a significant role in promoting the proper growth and healthy development of infants. Physically, massage

  • Stimulates the nerves and neurological development
  • Increases blood flow
  • Strengthens the immune system.
  • Relieves discomfort from gas, colic, and constipation
  • Aids in digestion
  • Increases alertness/heightened awareness
  • Reduces stress hormones

It can relieve a host of childhood complaints from colic to constipation. Massaging the chest may ease congestion. Gently stroking an infant’s face can improve their ability to suck. We are not trying to suggest that will ensure that they will be a happy and easy child. But it may be able to ease some of the problems that you could encounter along the way.

Pregnancy Massage

Pre and Post Natal Massage

You know you need to be strong and healthy to feel great (and be great) for your new baby. We specialize in working with women through all stages of pregnancy and after delivery. We are here to help make your life a little easier! We offer you Pre and Post Natal Massage.

The female body undergoes many changes during pregnancy, some of them very stressful and uncomfortable. Massage is a perfect combatant for the majority of discomforts these changes effect.

As a woman's body changes, so does her need for a different type of massage. Our therapists can focus on getting in deep to break up your tight knots, reduce the aching legs and feet cramps, and re-align your sore back through pregnancy massage. (Also called Pre natal massage).

Or the focus of the session may be to increase your relaxation so you can get a good night's sleep. When you are under stress your body produces stress hormones, which travel directly through your blood to your baby. We will aid in reducing your stress level, thereby reducing the amount of these hormones in your blood stream. Pregnancy massage will also increase the oxygen to you and your baby through the increased circulation and by focusing on awareness on your breathing.

For your comfort we have a special support pregnancy body cushion, which allows you to lie on your side supported with this wonderful cushion. We don’t endorse the tables with holes in them due to the fact they can’t be sized to your belly and therefore can do harm by stretching the ligaments supporting your uterus.

We can advise you on proper exercises to carry you through your pregnancy? You do need to set up a routine to strengthen your back, legs and arms to provide for an easier labor and delivery? If you are in good shape and strong you'll be well prepared for lifting and carrying baby once you’ve given birth!

Benefits Of Pre Natal Massage

  • Aids in waste elimination to control onset of varicose veins
  • Eases the load on the clients heart and helps keep blood pressure in check
  • Eases muscle discomforts such as cramping, back aches, tension and muscle knots
  • Relieves depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes
  • Improves general blood circulation delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the cells of both the mother and the fetus
  • Soothes and relaxes the nervous system

Post Natal Massage

First and foremost Post Natal massage can assist in faster healing and recovery after birth. The rectus abdominus (abdominal muscles), which has been stretched and somewhat separated by the distension of the abdomen during pregnancy, heals and returns to normal much faster when massage techniques are applied after birth.

Additionally, post natal massage helps with reducing stress hormones, relieving postpartum depression/anxiety, and help get you in shape mentally and physically for the joys and challenges of child rearing.
